The Dan grade syllabus differs from the main Kyu grade syllabus in that basic technique is assumed to be evident in order for the student to grade.

Kata is likely to be first to test. Then the student will have to show his understanding of  Ju Ippon Kumite and Ju Kumite.

It is believed that the demonstration of effective application of technique is required at this stage, with use of a partner. Hence Ju-Ippon Kumite, instead of Kihon. Initially they will be tested in Reaction – Kicks – Grappling – Throws - Groundwork

Therefore emphasis is upon the principles and quality of technique employed by the student during the grading. Marks are awarded for:

  •

  •  Fluidity oftransitions between stances and ranges.

  •  Focus and power deployed.

  •  Tactical awareness shown.

  •  Spirit shown.

 Effective use of points.

The goal of Golden Valley remains to develop all aspects of our martial system to compliment the sound Shotokan Karate base, developed over the last 30 years.

As a result the Dan grades will be expected to demonstrate an understanding of Grappling, Throws and Groundwork along with Weapon defence, in order to prepare for any eventuality.

2010 is the first year this will feature in the Dan syllabus, therefore technique will be relatively basic in nature. In future years it is hoped the range of technique will be integrated directly into the general syllabus allowing future students to demonstrate the full range of technique in sparring scenarios. A new Ju–Kumite will be introduced taking in all the aspects of combat to include:-

Throwing techniques, Vital point striking, Choke or Strangulation Techniques, Groundwork, Grappling, Joint Locking Techniques. This will be in a free style form where all aspects of combat can be demonstrated.

In this way the sound Goshin-Jutsu base created in the Kyu grade syllabus will be extended for real time, full range scenarios under full contact conditions.

We recognise that Kihon has its place in Karate as a learning tool and precision technique is its hallmark. However, the skills to handle real time combat demands we practice that way and ensure our techniques evolve from an A,B,C execution to confidence they will work under pressure if called upon. This demands a solid basis of two man set training, and honing technique on bag and pad work. Paralleling this we should ensure our understanding of vital points is not just academic but has a functional application.
